A real live fake inca hatchet
Ya know ! The kind of thing they get tourist to buy & tell em it's from the Inca tribe & junk like that !
I'm sure I'm wrong !
But then again ! That was my 1st. Impression.
Off the keel of a boat or an anode ??
I am not so sure this is a chisel. The iron looks old, pitted, like the bog iron tools and hearth implements of the 18th century. I am going to look at some books....is the "blade" tapered? does it have an edge like a hatchet would?
BHock45 - the rounded edge does taper down to what I would call a blade - however I would consider it too "fat" to be used as a blade if that makes sense. The opposite edge is over 1/4" thick, same width as the "handle end" For the amount of pitting I would still consider this edge to be fairly sharp, like a hatchet, yes.
So you are saying it is 8 inches long....it may be an early flint striker. I have seen some in a similar shape, but not exactly like this one. My last thought would be a scraper....but they were usually not shaped like this.
Take a look here:

They shape, direction of the blade, doesn't look like a hatchet to me
I think this went into a socket type wooden handle. It looks like an old barking spud to me. If you never worked in the woods or at a saw mill that doesn't mean anything to you but do some research on barking spuds and I think you may find it.
the entire piece is 8 inches long? or just the blade?
Search for "Veterinary Firing Iron" Mine was identified earlier on this site. Sure looks like the illustrations and photos.
RazorB, I think you hit the nail on the head. Mystery solved.
