Hi, this is a very unusual item. It is a lithographed tin of Sir John in either a brewery or pub. He is holding a glass of beer, with two beer barrels over and behind his shoulder on the left side of the image. There is no brand name on it. A magnet attracts to the image's metal sheet which measures 14" x 20 1/2". However, the scroll work and the inner molding are also metal, painted with gold leaf, but neither attracts a magnet. These are all separate pieces--plate image, scroll work, inner molding, wood outer frame. The outer frame is black enameled wood.
All of these layers are held in place by wood slates in the back. It is apparent that the assembly was made for all the original sizes of the pieces. All raw wood is time aged; it appears to be very old. The composition of the item is way too complicated for it too be a home job. There is also a remnant of a paper label on the back which reads in part, "C. AARO???, sales agent, The ME---------."
I contacted an antique advertising expert and he really had no idea
what it is.
Got it at an estate sale of elderly person in northern Indiana. It must've been stored in an attic, barn, etc. because it was covered with lots, and lots of dust.
Does anyone know what it is? Thanks a lot.
I am not sure -- but I have the same image of the guy on a early Beer Tray posted here. Mine is an old oval Pre-prohibition Tray with no name/bar on it. Was suggested to me Mine might have been Salesman Sample -- maybe that is what yours is too......for the diagram/picture ??
