Found this in an old pawn shop in Oklahoma. The lady had this for many years in her private collection. It was given to her and she was told it was an authentic buckle from the Civil War. She admitted when she first got it, it had a heavy patina and she cleaned it! (said her husband had a fit). She said she didn't know if it was real, but had always hoped it was. It looks like it is, but have heard there are many fakes out there. At any rate its a neat conversation piece.
Does anyone know how to tell the difference if its real or not?

Looks like a repro-- the hooks/ tongue and overfilled lead back are all indicators to me.

I agree with scottvez. In addition the letter spacing inside the oval is off. You might research S&S Firearms. They made reproductions and sold many of them. They did NOT advertise them as being original. They even built in flaws to make them look like the real thing. Scotts point about the fasteners is a valid point. There is a site that deals with nothing but belt buckle fasteners but I don't have it bookmarked. They have both videos and slide shows to help people identify what they have. I think it is called fastener fanatic or some such combination.

      Thanks Scott,
Yea, I suspected it was a remake. I paid $20.00 for it.
      Thanks for the help.
