I got this "Off To Widdicombe Fair" Mug at a flea market. It appears to be rather old and has crackle in the glaze. I have seen newer pottery with similar pictures but cannot locate another like this one. All of the characters on the front have names and the rhyme on the back is as follows:
"Tom Pearse, Tom Pearse, lend I the gray mare
All along, down along, out along Lee,
Vur us wants vur to go over to Widecombe Vair
With Bill Brewer, Jan Stewer,Peter Gurney, Peter Davy,
Dan'l Whiddon, Harry Hawk, an' auld
Uncle Tom Cobley an' all...."
I could actually sing this to you......it's a song of many verses we sang with my grandfather! This is the last verse I think. Each character had a verse.
Cool mug and thanks for reminding of something I would otherwise not have remembered!
racer and all...thank you!
racer, I am glad it brought back memories! This is one of those things that makes me smile!!!
