I was told that this was an antique sewing box, but no one can tell me what the item inside is and I am not able to find anything like it on the web. I would appreciate it if any of this web site's viewers can help to identify what the implement is and if this really is a sewing box. When I got it, it was filled with old thread. It was in my mother-in-laws family for years. I am not sure what the box or implement is made from.
Size of box - 12" long, 3.5" deep, 2.5" high.
The implement has a spring and you squeeze it open, but is not sharp. It is 6" long and at its widest handle spot 1.5". It has the appearance of being well used, but still in good shape. It is fairly heavy for its size (bone?).
There are a number of sewing websites listed on CW, maybe they can help. You might also try sending it into Kovels.
I think this is a glove box. The implement is used to stretch the fingers of the gloves when necessary.
That makes perfect sense! Thank you so much. I will search on that. My mother-in-law had always kept thread in it so I assumed it was a sewing box.
I did a search and it is a glove box. I found a box that even looks sort of like mine and several pictures of the tool in other boxes. Thank you so much for helping me identify this. I never would have even guessed that was what it was.
