Old U.S. Marshall Badge heavy duty clip marked sterling on the back. Did test to be sterling. What I can figure from AZ 1800's but so many replica and fakes. This isn't a fake got it out of a old box full wild west antiques and nobody makes things that well crafted no more. The back has small pits in it from antique casting methods. The front is tarnished like silver gets. This isn't fake crap off of eBay I studied this for hours. Can only find match in museum web sites... Why? Any info please superstar bobbyk@gmail 970 623 3706 text please
Not my real field, but will be watching other's inputs. Many of the early ones, I understand were hand made (even cut from sheet tinned steel). Be following, but be prepared to be cut down by our skeptics. I am one. I would say, fake because I can't imagine a badge being made out of a metal that the wearer might be shot for. Safer behind a tin badge.
Hate to tell you, but this appears to be a reproduction. The clasp is a modern clasp on a badge that would have been issues well before the clasp would have been invented. They can fake anything now a days, but this appears to be a better fake than those on eBay.
It could also be simply be a replacement clasp. Try your luck here. Maybe the guy who runs this site can help you.

Agree with justin-- modern repro.
Don't see any indications that the pin back is replaced/ updated.
