This is me as a kid helping my dad clean out the gutters better then house work any day. In those day's we didn't have guttering like the do today it was just all dirt roads great after it rain I enjoyed throwing mud at my sisters as they were scared of dirt. I on the other hand the dirtier I got the more I liked it.

I don't understand why on my post they are not opening up correctly but when I double click on them then they open so if you are having the same problem they should open up properly when you have gone to the site.

Child labour ! he he he but fun .. we were all expected to do things about the place then .. chores .. now days I think lots of kids are all princesses and beyond such things

It was done so it didn't flood out the front as when we first moved in there every time it rained we use to get a swimming pool in the front yard so anything to help deter it was dads policy. I just enjoyed mucking about in the mud it wasn't something I had to do.

Ken our roads back then were often just a strip of tar, with wide, gravel and dirt shoulders, and then a concrete gutter. Whenever it rained the run off the road crown always took dirt and gravel into the gutters so they were often blocked. Zowie I can remember making big dams with the dirt and like you, getting as dirty as possible!

ozmarty you are Wright if they did a bit more around the place they might appreciate things a bit more & have more respect if it's possible in todays standards. I was happy Virginia.vintage any time I was helping dad out beats house work at the time by that age we were also cooking & any other chore that had to be done. it was all fun we also played with paddle pop sticks & had races in the gutters. When the world was a better place & you could let the kids out without being to worried. It's a lot hard today in many ways letting go so kids can be kids

Yup, back then Kids could be Kids. We got dirty, got things in our mouths we should've -- but we lived, had fun, and learnt about responsiblites. Best way for a kid to be raised and better than living in some closed-in apartment. I can relate being from a Farm. I would have rather been slinging *cow pucky* in the barn side-by-side with my Dad....than inside doing dishes.

I was my Dad Side-kick for everything whether he was working on a Combine, or tractor. Best way to be raised!!!!

Thumbs up to that antiquerose, I agree with everything you've said. It must be pretty boring growing up in this day and age.

I agree totally I was exactly the same my dads side kick but I still had choirs that had to be done inside like helping to cook our nightly meal as both parents worked & kids should be taught these lessons we as parents will not be here forever
