It looks antique to me but I don't have much history on it since someone gave it to me but if anyone has any information on it, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!
Would like some info on small secretary desk. |

Hi, this is referred to as a "Davenport Desk"
I know this because I own one and is posted in my list of furniture.
There are before & after pics displayed of 106 hrs. Of restoration that I did.
No two are alike ! These small desks were originally designed by a sea captain (Capt. Davenport) for his ship / ca. 1865 because he wanted a desk that had as much capacity as a large desk but compacted to fit into tight places. These became very popular and many were produced for that purpose and then people started to use them in there homes. I live in a studio apt. In SF and is perfect for my place. (I'm actually restoring another old desk chair that's much more suited for the style and us about as old)! That I've recently posted although it's still not done .. Hopefully today ! Today ! Today ! (I'm so sick of it)!!! Lol!!! :P
Yours has lots of little drawers I see. Your lucky u don't have to restore it ! It looks old but it's hard to see w/ the pics turned. That happens if they're not cropped right. Usually cuz they're too long ! Keep em as square as possible. And u shouldn't have that problem anymore !?! Good lighting helps to determine age too cuz we are only examining in photos and not in person. These too are being reproduced so if it's not to beat up , and after a 100 yrs. of utilizing on a daily basis. Your gunna have some nicks , dents & scratches of some degree ! If not then it's too new ! Coarse that's just from my experience and I'm not an appraiser !
I have recently come across this desk also....it seems very old and there are no numbers any where, other than some scratched on Roman numerals on some of the side drawers. and it seems that the drawers only fit their respective openings on the desk. The drawers themselves have handmade wooden pulls on them. Would love to have more info from anyone
