This is a "Strawberry" basket, made by a member of the Wabanaki tribes around 1930-1940. It was made of wood splints from the Ash Tree and also Sweet Grass is used for the center weave in the lid, and also is lashed to the rims of the top and bottom. This basket was made using a "curly" style of weave, and is not easy to do. The splints can break while the artist is weaving and they must be careful not to put too much pressure on the wood.

This basket measures about 5 inches in diameter with the lid a bit bigger than the bottom. It is about 4 1/2 in height and has no damage. This basket came from an estate and the color is still very vibrant, with the outside of the basket just as colorful as the inside. This basket has been added to my ever growing collection, enjoy the pics :)

this is a really great little basket! does the sweetgrass still smell? i LOVE the smell of it, and it seems to get stronger over the years.

      Thanks for the comments :)

And yes ho2cultcha, it does still smell of Sweetgrass and I love it too. And when I get a "new addition" to my collection I always show them to my mother. The first thing she does after I hand the basket to her is put her face right into it, to smell the Sweetgrass. I get braids of it to place all around my home and also my mother's home. It just smells so good and it has a calming effect, I think. Every time I bring a new addition into my collection I smudge it with Sage and Sweetgrass. I welcome the item and I thank the artist who made it.
