I purchased this item recently under the pretense that it was some sort of civil war artifact. Possibly a cover for some kind of equipment. I need help identifying what exactly the piece is - Is it a civil war artifact? And what type of equipment it was used on. (Hopefully, a cannon or caisson.)
It is approximately 3" (7.5 cm) wide and 3" tall. It is made from cast iron. It looks like one would loosen a screw and move the item to gain access to something below it.
Welcome to CW:)
Your piece is from the Union Army(North). If it were from the south it would have CS for confederate states. To determine if thus us a true civil war relic, you might need to find an appraiser that specializes in civil war relics or contact the seller of the piece for more info.
Thanks for the information robin. I'm still puzzled by this piece and I'm still not even sure if it is civil war. I was told by the person I got it from that it was. But we all know how that goes when someone is trying to sell you something.
You might want to contact Steve Heller of Heller's Civil War Antiques in PA. He has a website & was very helpful in authenticating a civil war buckle for me. Good luck!
Thanks Harborguy. I will do that and post what I find out.
It doesn't look Civil War to me-- nothing military that I can associate it with.
I collect and deal in Civil War items-- I attend several shows each year.
Thought I'd posted on this a while ago?

I will throw in 2 cents. I think the lettering is not right for civil war but they very well could be correct. I think this was intended to be a lid on a melting pot for field use to make your own bullets.
Certainly looks like the lid or top to SOMETHING.
Vast majority of Civil War bullets were arsenal produced.
Some soldiers carried sidearms that necessitated the individual soldier pouring bullets from lead, but I am not familiar with any standard US "melting pot" to facilitate "in the field" bullet creation.

I am quite skeptical too scott. I really don't think it is civil war but I sure would like to know just what exactly it is. I plan on reaching out to the gentleman Harborguy mentioned. I will keep you posted.
Thanks for all your input!
Were earlier comments deleted? Seems we went through this before.

Must have been something similar.
There are a lot of supposed civil war items posted on this site.

Looks like a lid they may have cooked beans in or something??? or the pot itself and they'd hang a spoon on the side there...
