This is a very old Hoosier cabinet that belonged to my Grandmother,It was given to me by my parents some years ago along with the original bread bowl, rolling pin, cutting board and a few cookie cutters and egg beater.I think the reason I was chosen to have this was because I spent so much time in the kitchen with my Grandmother when I was growing up and that is where she started teaching me to cook when I was 8 years old.My Mom was always a working woman so when school was out in June my parents always take us to visit the Grandparents and I spent the entire summer there until I reached my teen age years and decided I would rather stay home with my friends. To this day I still feel guilty about that but they understood that I was growing up and friends were important too.
I wanted to put this in my kitchen but I have no room for it there so it stands in my workroom and holds all of my crafting supplies. This along with a few photos and her little Elgin watch is all I have left of her,but oh do I have the memories.

Beautiful!! My grandma had one like it. Does this one have the flour storage/sifter box in it?
    3. Dottie Dottie, 14 years ago
Thank you for the comment CAD1949,yes it has the flour bin with the sifter and it also has the bread drawer in the lower part of the cabinet. The only thing missing is the slatted roll top which I am still looking for so I can replace it.

Very nice keepsake of your grandmother!!!
    5. Dottie Dottie, 14 years ago
thank you officialfuel, yes I think so much of her whenever I look at it which is often. It's not the original color,we painted it to match the enamel pull out table. If it were oak we would not have touched it but it was always painted as I can remember.

My wife would kill for this...but then again, she's kinda violent anyway...where do you live?
    7. Dottie Dottie, 14 years ago
Thank you for the comment toolate2,I had my chuckle for the day. I really don't think it would be very wise of me to tell you where I live if your wife is violent, nope, not a good idea at all.Between you and me,why don't you just tell her that I live in cyberspace and she can visit my cabinet any old time she wants.I wll leave the photo up for her, then I can sleep at night LOL Thanks again for the giggles, you are just great and also very funny

      Try... kennedyhardware.com
they are a big supplier of restoration hardware & they have the tamdour (slatted rolling) kits. Check under Hoosier Cabinet hardware. Hope this is helpful.

Thank you Mary Ann,kennedyhardwre is a great site.I could have this baby looking like new with all of the replacement parts they have. This was very helpful, thanks again!

Dottie! Your story about the Hoosier is about a wonderful one as I've ever read. It reflects to all of our memories of growing up and our feelings and emotions ! I have the same regrets, but, granny never said a word. She just love us.
    13. Dottie Dottie, 13 years ago
Thank you for the wonderful sentiment Mixalis, thank goodness the beautiful memories far outweigh our regrets.

Was this originally painted red & white?
    18. Pop_abides Pop_abides, 13 years ago
hotkitties, I'm not going to beat you up but............see comment #5 concerning color. Also from what I have been told by experts, these were meant to be painted, as far as I know very few were made of 'good' wood because they were such a utility item and as such were meant to last a long time and that meant painting them to match other kitchen items. Sorry hotkitties........... you know I can't resist LOL
    19. hotkitties, 13 years ago
Hi Pop- thanks, I don't always read first, I just look! The reason I asked is because I have a McDougall that was painted, I don't now if the paint was original, but under the paint was gorgeous solid oak. Makes me wonder what's under the red & white!!
    20. Dottie Dottie, 13 years ago
Wow,thanks for all the likes, loves and comments marcobabe13,lisa and Needful_Things,have a great weekend.

Hi hotkitties and Pop_abides,thanks for stopping by.This particular cabinet has been painted many colors during it's life time,it was blue when I received it but as you mentioned Pops,it was not matching anything here so I decided to paint it.However,I have also seen these cabinets which are made of oak or good wood that have been painted, what a crime!! So rest assured that I did check the wood before picking up a paintbrush and after seeing it was mostly plywood,I figured what the heck, anything would be better than country blue.

WOW this is too cool.I have an old nutchopper with a red handle that would be perfect on this Hoosier.I would love for it to be somewhere it belongs.I think it really belongs with this cabinet. They should be reunited. So if you send me your address I can figure out the shipping...Meanwhile I'll start clearing a spot for the cabinet in my kitchen.LOL P.S. I'll even split the shipping with you.
This is a truly beautiful cabinet !
    23. Dottie Dottie, 13 years ago
Thank you for stopping by Hedgewalker, I'am so glad you love my cabinet. Thanks for the generous offer on the nutchopper. If you want to send your email address,we can make it happen, unless you have changed your mind by now.
    24. Hedgewalker Hedgewalker, 13 years ago
Hi Dottie I think you misread my post.I said I'd be clearing out a spot for the cabinet. But I did look and I do have two red handled nutchoppers. One has a plastic handle the other a wooden knob handle. You are more than welcome to one for free. The only thing is the shipping will probably be more than you can buy one for locally. They are quite common and cheap. If you want it let me know.I can send a pic if you'd like.
    25. Dottie Dottie, 13 years ago
      Good Morning Hedgewalker,
Please don't work too hard clearing a space for my cabinet LOL,there happens to be a long waiting list ahead of you and you may have to live with the empty space for a very long time,so sorry for the bad news but thanks a bunch for the laugh.Lets talk about the nutchopper with the wooden handle,if you will post a photo I would truly appreciate it.And can you calculate postage to 60659 for me?
Hey,look at me making work for you but since you offered......Anyway,I don't have one and it will soon be time to make Xmas cookies
Thanks and have a great day!

Ahh the Hoosier, that's where Grandma kept the fresh bread, butter & strawberry jam. The sight of one takes me right back to her kitchen, love it.

Thank you for the love BELLIN68,Have a great evening!

Thank you for the love and the comment walksoftly, yes,my Grandmother kept all the goodies in this cabinet. My job was to measure the flour from the big sifter for the buttermilk biscuits she baked for us every morning.I learned a lot from my Grandmother including how to make her buttermilk biscuits, they never taste as good as hers but they will pass.

I just posted a similar cabinet and you can see it if you search for "hoosier cabinet". Ours is not a Hoosier but there were many companies that competed with very similar products. Thank you for sharing the images of your Hoosier and your memories of recent history. I have done some work on our cabinet by cleaning up the paint, hardware, etc. There were chips on the sliding work surface so I touched it up with some red enamel I have to look for it to find it.
