This flat button has what looks to be a shield. It is a little smaller than a quarter. It was dug among other just plain flat buttons, many smashed round balls and a thimble. The property in 1877 was owned by a woman and the next property was the school house.
    Any help will be appreciated.

It appears to be a US Army button.

I hesitate to comment because I think this is from a period I'm not very experienced with. If it is a U.S. Army button, it would be a very early one. I'm thinking 1830s or earlier. After that US military buttons tended to be two-piece construction.
