For every ship sunk while on patrol a victory pennant would be made. These were made by the most artistic crew members. Some pennants would have the tonnage of the ship sunk along with the outline of the ship, others would only have the tonnage, still, others like this one would have the type of ship sunk. This pennant is made of white canvas and covered with a red material. The word Zerstorer, meaning Destroyer, was painted on using a stencil. It is a two sided pennant. The edge of the pennant is frayed from use. When the u boat returned to port after a patrol the victory pennants were all displayed on a line tied from the periscope to a railing. This showed the greeting crowd how successful the patrol had been. This pennant came from a u boat that surrendered to the Canadian Navy.
