This celadon ceramic flower vase features a unique semi-round body covered with two diamond windows, one containing plum blossoms while the other contains an image I am unfamiliar with. Korean plum blossom has long been the herald of spring. Korean artists have been fascinated by maehwa, which blooms at the end of winter, and thus have praised it as a symbol of the noble spirit overcoming all hardships. The traditional bakji (sgraffito) technique was used to create the images on the surface of this beautiful ceramic vase. White clay and traditional red copper painting is used to draw the floral and blossom designs, and the remaining part of the surface is scraped off for an attractive color contrast.
Serenely beautiful.
