Here's another nice paperweight for my collection from Volunteer's of America. The lady from production was putting things out and this magically appeared on my second pass through the glass aisle. The signature is almost invisible unless viewed at just the right angle and in good light. I didn't even see it till I got home. I quick check on Ebay for a similar ones confirmed the signature. It's marked H.S. in a script monogram with May... 90 with the numbers 05-08. Henry Summa 's helix designs are an interesting use of ribbons and spirals of glass in a 4 1/2" cut away egg shape. The back side has a satin iridescent finish. Sadly Mr. Summa passed away from cancer in 2008 at the age of 59 . -Mike-

    Henry Summa (1949-2008)

Henry Summa has been working in glass since 1972. His early training in the glass arts was based on an apprenticeship at Glory Hole Glassworks in New Mexico. This apprenticeship emphasized creating and production of traditional and functional vessel forms. Summa built his first studio in New York near Woodstock. After 2 years he moved his studio to his present location behind his home in New Mexico. Over the last few years he has found his work growing away from functional forms into more sculptural and complex designs. Summa does extensive cutting, polishing and assembly after the cooling process. Many of his pieces include glass cane and murrini that he has personally made to add more interest and individuality to his designs. Summa has developed a series of faceted sculptures and paperweights, platters and vessels. He has developed a consistent following of collectors for his work.

Nice Mike!! Wonder if this is the same maker (no extra info tho )

yeah Mike -- wonder why? As that link I gave you above lists that it was from:

""PROVENANCE: From the Collection of Dr. & Mrs. Ivan Cohen.""

So some Doctors owned that one, along with many other top quality pieces!! Maybe it was a local artist ?? Found on-line (if the same Doctor) that he is from:

""Dr. Ivan Cohen is a psychiatrist in Newark, Delaware. He received his medical degree from Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and has been in practice for 45 years.""

That's some provenance Rose :).... when I was researching this one I came across this site. http://www.theglassgallery.com/ which is L.H. Selman's Gallery. They appraise and auction collections. Mostly Baccarat, Clichy, and St. Louis. The prices are jaw dropping. One Baccarat is listed at $35,000 !! They also have an extensive artist list which includes modern artists as well, but no H.L. Marut. They don't seem to sell for much judging from the auctions I've come across. Only around thirty to forty dollars. I paid three for this one :)

      Mike ... Is it MSH 90 ????

      Henry Summa
    14. mikelv85 mikelv85, 10 years ago
Hmm..it could be eye..it's does look more like an H S with May 90 05-08. This changes things a bit. I had found the one on ebay that said Marut maybe they misread it as well. Not the clearest engraving.

I think you nailed it eye :) ...except for the complete last name the script looks identical same "H" same "S" even the month and number sequence match. A big thank you !
    17. antiquerose antiquerose, 10 years ago
I do not know -- just that the one on the above link I posted (repeat link):

      http://jamesdjulia.com/item/lot-2317-large-signed-paperweight-62895/

Is much like yours with the frosted sides. At that above link it says [ QUOTED]:

"""LARGE SIGNED PAPERWEIGHT. Interesting large paperweight is elongated egg shaped with the front side polished clear and the back rounded side is lightly frosted and iridized with two polished windows near the top. Weight is decorated with stylistic flower bud in red and white with blue stylistic leaves surrounding it and red and white ribbons encircling the backside. Signed on the underside “HL AP87 04-17?. SIZE: 8? t. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of Dr. & Mrs. Ivan Cohen. CONDITION: Very good to excellent. 5-62895 (200-400)""""

The description of this one (egg shaped, and lightly frosted) sounds MUCH like yours posted...?? In my Opinion

Mike ... Light it up from underneath ...
    19. antiquerose antiquerose, 10 years ago
      ...you said yours is marked:

      """ HL MAR90 05-08 """"

So yours is even marked VERY similar to the one in the link saying it is marked:

      """ HL AP87 04-17 """

So gotta be the same maker for both -- BUT who ??

Ahhh, contact the Doctor that owned that one in the link...............LOL
    20. mikelv85 mikelv85, 10 years ago
Well after looking at the few Henry Summa's on ebay and the signatures there's no doubt that mine is by the same maker. They vary a bit over the years but the H S not H L as I thought is fairly consistent , The design elements are dead on too. Now I need to find out more about him an amend this post. Thanks for the help everyone !

??? A -- "" HL Hoyt"" - Wrote some stuff on Glass Blowing, and sells Glass Stuff. Ya think if he wrote some info on Glass Blowing, he should know the subject matter ??

I dunno if this helps or not..........getting too late here. Gotta z-z-z-z-z-z-

okay -- I was going with the HL -- You can delete all that out to shorten the mix up of HL and HS -- Just delete my post

      Way to go finding it......!!
    23. mikelv85 mikelv85, 10 years ago
Thanks Rose :) it's OK .... shows the thought process while researching. Turns out to be a better find than I thought .
    24. mikelv85 mikelv85, 10 years ago
Here's a link to some info and pictures. Seems that he does more sculptural than functional pieces now.

I can't get enough of paperweights ... Perfect size and so many variations to make for great collecting ...
    28. mikelv85 mikelv85, 10 years ago
Agreed eye :)....my collection is growing. I have a few Murano, an Eickert, and even an Abelman mushroom which I really love. Some mystery signed ones. A couple Chinese ones too but what the heck they're pretty none the less. I'll have to leave the Baccarat's and Clichy's for the people with deeper pockets..lol.
    29. eye4beauty eye4beauty, 10 years ago
Keep digging and turning over stones ... I have found Baccarat starfish for under 2 bucks ... They are out there, waiting to be found :)
