Big eyes = Big creepy factor to me and I love a creepy/odd item. Found these at a garage sale I think I paid a $1 for both of them. They are big in fact I have yet to see or find another as large as these. 39"x 15 1/2" with frame. Paintings are dirty and they are signed but I cant make the name out. Any one know anything about these or have some? I would love to hear back.
These were so big in the 60's. Love it!
Arts in Corrections (AIC) began as a pilot project in 1977. The big eyed girls were painted by an inmate doing life in prison for killing little girls; he was incarserated at Vacaville Medical Facility in the late 1950's and his art became so popular that the Department of Corrections started the AIC program in 1977 at a cost to taxpayers of $3 million dollars annual budget. The Vacaville Medical Facility is like the X-Files and they do these medical experiments on inmates; one such medical workshop is the transgender surgery. This artist is no longer a male and was released in 1984 as a female, she violated her parole for numerous prostitution and call girl activity; she hung herself at CCWF. Yes, young lady, you found creepy.
WOW...... that's all I can say about that ! That is a Halloween story if I ever heard one.
The artist while he was male in prison signed his work MAIO but heard that changed with gender. I think the father of current Governor of California Jerry Brown still owns the copyrights to those big eyed girl pictures. The transvestite artist never got a dime.
