I've had this sake set for a good few years now but I have no knowledge of its history as I bought it in a charity shop. Isn't it a beauty though? There is one jar and five cups. I have very little knowledge about pottery but I believe the white pattern on it is called a 'slip'??? If anybody can help me identify it I'll finally be able to sleep at night and dream about one day climbing Miunt Fuji myself.
Slip is a suspension of clay particles in water. It is usually the consistency of heavy cream. It's used to decorate pottery, and is applied to leather-hard clay, rather than to bisque ware, like glaze. It can be any color, depending on the type of clay used, and the coloring agents which may, or may not, be added. So this appears to be a glaze, rather than a slip.
Japanese tea cups often come in sets of 5, rather than 4 or 6. You don't give the size of these, but they look a little large for saki cups.

Canyon, thanks for clearing that slip thing up for me. That's great. The cups are quite small, just less than 2 inches.
