I was delighted to come across this wonderful pair of Harrach 1860’s comports a little while ago…I love the décor and of course the snakes..their my first real! snakes..
Decor is known as EISGLAS (ice glass)… colourless crackle glass, mould blown.. and the snakes are a pretty pink/red glass and polished gold to highlight the snakes markings.
I was really surprised at the size of them when I unpacked them, even though it did say on the auction, they are huge, and can handle quite a bit of fruit in them…can’t wait till Christmas to fill them with fruit in one and! nuts in the other, will look lovely together at each end of the table.
In excellent condition with a little wear to the gilding..and standing....23 cm x 23 cm in diameter..or... 9 x 9 inches.
Thank you for looking.

Hi Inky. Stunning!! Wonderful info too. Eisglas...new to me..I recently treated myself to a vase, a different shape, but so similar to yours here, Eisglas with a red snake, I think it must also be Harrach. I'll post it soon as I get some pics. It's funny but even knowing a size, things often look bigger or smaller than I imagined.
sweet.....
Hi, inky So nice comports! These 2 matches what I am looking for...
I have photos from Harrach design book for Beyermann&Company and am trying to find / understand how the glass could look like when finished... The drawings are from ca 1873 and it is written ( I have a person helping me to read and explain , old German letters) "Ice glass" on several. And one piece has a snake wrapped around, too!
