A friend of mine went to a local Antique show and purchased this, claimed to be very old, leather covered handled case which has a very unusual closure. He asked me what I thought about it and if I thought that it was old. It measures 14 3/4" long by 6" wide and 7" tall. Inside there is a blue felt that looks almost new and a strap that holds the lid open. The outside has strips of leather that covers a wooden frame and the closure and handle seem to be glued in layers on the case. Tiny round nails are hammered on the corners and four round feet underneath appear to have been glued. The leather strips, especially on the corners have definite wear. The closure is a round peg that you slide into the double locket. I told him that I'd ask my CW friends if they had seen a similar case that had been made this way. I have no idea what it was used for. Any ideas? I have a feeling that it's not that old but made to look old. Any comments appreciated. RER(BOB)

Very Interesting, Unusual and Beautiful looking Box! I have never seen anything like it, as far as the design. The handle is big enough for a gorilla to grip, the dead bolt looks to be 1/2" diameter, yet it has NO locking mechanism? It looks like it is built to carry a ton, yet is has a smooth, clean velvet lining? Questions: It the locking bolt slide holder bent down on the bottom? Is it made of wood, with the leather as a cosmetic covering?
Thanks frisco! In the first photo, the bolt slide holder is down and is held down by the leather cover that is flared-out. I think that the leather was made that way to catch the bolt handle. Yes. the body is all wood covered with leather. RER(BOB)
