I am not sure what these are. I have been told they originally belonged to my Great Grandfather, found among my Grandfather's fishing equipment & have made their way to my son. Which if this is so, makes them early 1900's, West Liberty, Ohio. Are they floats? Markers for traps of some kind? They are in good condition having been stored in a custom wooden box. 12 of them, all with fishing cord/line & a float. Would love it if someone could tell me what these are & how these were used. Thanks!
The canisters are wood, with center corks top & bottom. There is a small screw eye on the top. Hgt 5.75" Diameter 3.5" At the end of the line is quite a large hook. (I could not correct the close up image of the canister from rotating) The decor is hand painted, as is the box. Each compartment of the box is numbered, by hand in gold. Let me know if more info is needed.
Hook is 2" x 3/4" The line is over 30 to the cork & 3-4 ft to hook.

Some better close-ups of the canisters might help, plus demensions and any markings? Very interesting.

Something about these floats says "turtles" to me.
Folks who hunt 'em will do something similar now with modern plastic milk jugs ~ tie some line to the handle, put some bait on a hook and toss 'em into the water. When you see them moving (or moved) to a different position, you pull them up and harvest the snapping turtle that swallowed the hook. Then it's stew time!
Could be wrong, but that's what I think. No idea why the set is numbered other than to be able to keep track of where they were.

Whatever the purpose, that is intrinsically a beautiful set of (fill in the blank) you've got there!

He was near the Ohio river which is known as a catfishing hotspot. Probably custom made locally or by him. Jug lining catfish has been used for century's to catch large amounts of catfish.

Thanks to all who have responded above here! Turtles & catfish sound right. West Liberty is north west of Columbus. It would have been a trek to get to the Ohio River but the Scioto River & Indian Lake were close. It would not surprise me if he hand crafted these. From what I know, he was the owner of Cook's Bar & Grill in West Liberty & as the inn keeper there also, he meticulous in the way he dressed, monogrammed handkerchiefs & all. My grandfather also took very good care of his fishing & hunting equipment. I just added a pic of the hook for Manikan. This is all very fascinating. Thanks again.
