This Teddy was my Mother's childhood friend. She was born in 1936, so I'm guessing this 20 inch cuddly beast was given to her in the mid-40's. The fur appears to be mohair, the paw-pads a velvet fabric, and the eyes are plastic, not glass. Articulated head, arms, and legs. Other than that there are no other clues to its manufacture. No maker-tags. No buttons. It does however have a curious cloth tag on the left paw with the number 82. I have scoured the internet, scrutinizing hundreds of teddy bear pictures...with no matches. This bear has such unique ears! Over-sized...almost koala-like. Any help in identifying this Teddy would be most appreciated.
Hello,
You're mothers bear looks like a original Steiff . Will have to pull out my teddy bear book and research it.
Will let you know what I find.
Thanks, TTBS! Anything you can find out about this fuzzy guy will be awesome. I was told by a local toy "expert" that it wasn't a Steiff because the body wasn't rigid enough. I'm hoping YOU are right!
Your mom's teddy bear is definitely a Knickerbocker from circa 1940. I have a cinnamon bear exactly like yours. ????
SadeeAnne...very nice to "meet" you! Thank you so much for your comment. Your belief that my Mother's bear dates from around 1940 certainly fits, as she would've been 4 years old at the time. I would love to see your cinnamon bear so I could compare the two! Plus...the riddle of the number 82 tag has been solved. That is the student number my Mom was assigned in school as a child.
I am in the middle of moving, so will not be able to post the picture of my bear for awhile, but will see if I can find one online for you. Enjoy your sweet bear.
