My mother in law dug this up in our garage the other day and was talking about how she's going to be moving again and didn't want to keep hauling it with her because it weighs so crazily heavy. Apparently her dad who served on the Sproston during either WW2 or Korea somehow acquired it, but he never told her the story about how it came into his possession. I'm not sure much about it as far as how many bells are normally on a ship, if it's the only one.. etc..

This is most likely the only bell. Research shows that post WWII Navy ships carry 2, one "official" and one that is used over the PA system once the ship is underway. Your ship, being 1943, most likely only had this one. If you do not desire to keep it I think any area maritime or Naval Museum would love your bell. I normally deal with railroad objects. I have donated many to relevant area museums so others can enjoy and learn from the items.
