Hoipolloi
(25 items)
I recently treated myself to this cool looking smoking set. I no longer smoke but I still had to have it.
I've no idea how old it is, although I'm guessing 1960s, and it appears to be completely unused.
The design is what caught my eye. Turquoise with an unusual pattern running through it. I believe that's called a drip glaze???
Anyway, I think it looks like black veins or arteries. Ironic design for a smoking set, don't you think?
Any ideas about Who? Where? What? etc. would be very welcome.
Happy trails x
Very nice set, hoipolloi!
Thanks Katherine x
Thanks Nuts. There are no markings on the lighter itself. It still sparks though and it has clearly never been filled. The wick is still nice and white. I'll try and post a picture.
What a fantastic set!
Any chance of a base photo?
Sure racer. I'll get on it first thing tomorrow. It's very late here x
Black veins or arteries huh?... LOL. Great set Mand!
Thanks Rick. Any ideas who it might be by? x
I don't smoke but I like this!
It is a nice set, I love the color too. Did you lift the lighter out? And no markings? Bet it's pre 60's...
Yes, I re-posted them showing the bases and the lighter. No clues on either x
Could be *Hand-painted* DELFT HOLLAND as a possibility ?? I have a Blue/Gold veined ashtray marked on the bottom with that

................Anyhow, that would be *my guess* as the maker. Not sure IF everything was marked ?????
Thanks antiquerose. Apologies for the long delay in replying; I've been on my honeymoon. Yes, I think you've solved the mystery :))
Mine are all unmarked by the way. I posted the bottoms of them all a couple of days after this post. x
I would still say Holland Delftware....In my opinion

Just my opinion.....LOL
Thank you Antiquerose. You've solved the mystery x
Yes, I agree with Rose, i had something similar years back marked, Holland Delft on a green felt base. I did a bit of searching and found out about a company called Jumbo Pottery in Gouda. http://www.goudadesign.co.uk/collectorsgallery2.html#anchor108436
I have no idea if any other companies made this pattern though.
i'm not sure the maker, but i would guess this is from 1958-60, from the colors.
Because the linked examples all have distinctive markings on the back, and Hoipolloi pieces have no markings at all, I would be hesitant to be so sure these were manufactured by same maker.
Thanks for all your help xx
