We don't really collect Plastic signs at AaaLakeside Storage but this early CONOCO plastic sign was free and we thought it might look good on a building somewhere in the collection. We found this a couple of years ago at a small country Bulk Plant & it was in the complete aluminum sign frame. The owner of the Plant agreed to give us the faces but said that he had a friend in the sign business that wanted the frame for a sign he was going to make. No problem, we thought! Right! Then we started trying to dismantle the sign to get the faces off only to find that it was built like an aircraft & filled with screws & we had left our elect screw gun home to conserve on space. Dumb move on our part! After wasting a lot of time I gave up, thinking that I might be up that way again some time & get it then. We did return two more times and were prepared with everything we thought we would need to get the faces. Each time we found the sign covered with snow and impossible to dig out. Finally we arrived in the Spring and found access to be easy but the sign not easy to disassemble even withi a screw gun as the retainers on the border of the plastic were not only screwed together, but also glued with some very good adhesive. We gave up and just punched out the pins on the hinges that held the doors on and this is the result. Where to display it is now the question? This was a case of the Fun being completely in the Hunt and the Find being a lot more work than it was worth! As a side story, the old guy who was going to use the frame for another sign actually died during the time it took us to return to get the sign faces and the bulk Plant owner had completely forgotten about giving us the sign faces so we had to start all over again to convince him that he ought to give them to us. Too much Time is not our friend!

We also have a big plastic Texaco sign on a pole. I think it's a 70s sign like this one.
