I recently purchased this oil painting at a yard sale. It's frame was old and ornate, but crumbling. Being a history buff, I would love to know more about the subject of this painting.

Great portrait! From his dress and the flat coin buttons, I would think this is very late 18th/ early 19th century.

Some additional photos that show the entire painting (front and back) and the crumbling frame may yield additonal clues.

Good luck with an ID-- a "cold" ID without provenance or some sort of markings on the actual painting is going to be a tall order.

      Thanks for sharing.
