      Hi!
This looks like a " Gut Blade " from the cut out and the large belly. These are used in hunting usually in the field, it helps cut with out damaging the meat. However this is not the "A typical " blade you would expect from a manufacturer.
It is possible a hunter made his own. Is there a Notch at the top of the blade also? Keep in mind handles can be replaced etc. so that makes it even harder to date. Also were there other hunting items available from where you acquired this knife? That could seal it :)

Just to add to what "trusted.couple" said, your knife has the overall look of the Negrito Bolo knives made in the Philippines, imo. They made/make many styles of knives out of old vehicle leaf spring steel, and have for many years. I like the looks of finger slot design, if that is what it is. Very Cool Indeed!

Hmm Frisco, interesting. The Negritos look more like Bowies don't they? I also see where it could be something similar, perhaps a golok found in Borneo and Malaysia for cutting bamboo wood etc. Hmm THE PLOT THICKENS! ;) I agree very cool!

There ya go, If his back story is true it was more than likely for cutting bamboo etc. on farms. Could have been handmade. Hard to tell if handle is original to it, especially with those types of pieces because of the abuse they took.
