Unfortunately I really don't know much about what I believe to be the guts of a scale. The building was rebuilt in 1866 after the evacuation fire in Richmond VA. We do know that the building was once used as a hardware store. We believe that was her first use. the only markings I have found so far on the iron bars are the number 324 and 388 no name plates (that I found yet) Anyone have any ideas. We would like to clean it up and display it as part of the history of the building
Any idea what the original building housed? (type of business)
Hardware store is what I have been told.
Unfortunately it looks like the platform is missing that links to what you have, also the post or tower that reads the weight is missing. Look up images on Google for Fairbanks or Howe scales, that should help identify this and familiarize you with the missing pieces.
I believe it to be a Fairbanks based on photographs I have seen of some other scales with similar internals
