There are no markings on this. They belonged to my Aunt’s mother in law who came to Indianapolis from Germany. Best guess is late 1800’s or early 1900’s
I’ve seen similar chairs but never like this.

I have a chair that is identical to yours! ~~~ I inherited it from my granddad who died in 1972. Anyway, for years I have been wanting to find out more about this chair… Unfortunately, I was pretty young when my granddad passed and I never got the chance to ask him and nobody else in the family seems to know much about it either. Several years ago, my grandmother's brother told me that someone else in our family had once had its twin but he couldn't tell me whatever happened to it. I suppose it's entirely possible that it is the one you have. Like you, I have seen several that were similar but never a spot on match. At any rate, I would love to know if you have been able to find out anything
I have not been able to find out anything more at all. I was so hoping someone on here could tell me. All I know is that my Aunt’s husband lived in Indianapolis and his parents owned these chairs. My Dad later told me that he thought they probably originally came from Germany, where they came from. I think his mom died somewhere in the mid 70’s at around 95 or something like that. I would love to get them appraised
Yes I have also wanted to get mine appraised. I would never sell it, although pretty much anyone who sees it tries to talk me out of it… No, I primarily would like to know for insurance purposes. I just don't know anything about antiques and really have no clue as to where to even start.
Same here. I thought about taking this picture to some antique dealers but the last one I went to years ago told me it was one of those Mission chairs which I’m pretty sure was totally wrong.
If I ever do find out I will let you know.
I can't imagine why a dealer would say that... as far as I know, these are nothing like any Mission Chair I have ever seen. I believe those are boxy and kind of plain, with no ornamentation.
I really appreciate you keeping me in mind if you come across any info. I will definitely do the same! If nothing else, I think it's really cool that I found someone that has such a rare item in common.

Take a pic of your chair around to some local auction dealers and antique furniture places and see what they tell you. I’d love to send it to one of those TV places and high end auction houses!
I'm almost afraid of what I would find out. Somewhere, I saw some chairs that looked pretty similar (at least to me) for sale a few days ago that were priced in the neighborhood of $4800-$5000!!! I swore I would never sell but if it is truly worth that much, I would be very tempted. To be honest, I'm thinking $400-$500 might be a more realistic figure but like I said… I'm pretty clueless when it comes to the value of antique furniture. However, if I were to find out it belonged to some famous aristocrat from the 1800's and was worth a million $$$… I would sell it so fast, if you blinked all you would see of it would be dust in the air!
If you can find out who sold it we can contact that person! Did you see that i have a similar smaller rocking chair but it has dolphins or fish or something instead of a lion.
A friend sent me a similar pic of a chair but it was mahogany shiny finish and went for $900
I can't even remember where I saw it, I was mainly just focused on finding another chair just like mine…. but that's a great idea for sure and if I ever run across that site or another one that's similar, I will definitely check in with them.
I had not seen your other chair but I just looked at it and it is really spectacular! I would almost be tempted to say those are swans except it almost looks like scales further down. Then again, that might be plumage. I don't exactly know a whole lot about birds either...hahaha. From what I could tell, it kind of looks like duck heads on the hand rests. Regardless, it's definitely an exquisite piece of furniture. I almost hate to call pieces like this "furniture"… to me, they honestly look more like art.
Another thought I had was that it might be sea horses. Can't really say about the had rests. I could see frogs or fish or ducks or any number of things. No matter what they are, it's a beautiful piece.
