I happened to cross paths with this beautiful sage green handled pottery find during one of my many Goodwill adventures. I must say I love Goodwill because donated items are always changing, and it's not unusual to find something rare, something unique. This trip was no exception. I think I paid all of $6.00 for it. I was intrigued by the little handles it had on each side, by the way the glaze didn't fully touch the bottom, and mostly by the language imprinted on the bottom of this piece. I couldn't wait to get it home to research "What is it?". After much searching, the closest thing I could find was what Chinese people used centuries ago, called storage jars. Except this one had the four loops on all sides, which I learned are called "lugs". I learned that ancient Tea Leaf Masters, called similar looking vessels, "Chigusas", which were used in the art of fermenting tea leafs. These masters would often keep tea diaries, which often recorded the arts of their talents, and even left inscriptions, which may be what is depicted on the base of this important historical master-piece. Often fancy ropes were used to decorate, or carry such storage jars. Another Mystery Unsolved?
