I was wondering anyone maybe able to tell me if these opals are worth anything. The majority of them are solid stones and there are also a few doublets.

      Hi!
I can see crazing on most big ones, and the black oval upper right looks heated.
No big value here, just an advice (CW isn't an appraisal site!).
Anyway, very useful lot for repair or project!

Thanks Kyratango, excuse my ignorance but is crazing cracking?
The large black ones are actually brown. I wasn't after a value, really advice to see if the were worth taking for appraisal.

Crazing is lines in opal body, due to dessication, they may crack!
I don't know how much cost an appraisal where you are, but you can ask a jeweller (not only a jewelry retailer!) his advice :-))
You can also check on Ebay completed auctions worldwide for opals job lot.

They are from around the 1950s and some look a lot nicer than the ones I have seen on ebay. It's also hard to tell looking at the photos.
I will attempt to take them into a jewellers, the nearest one from me is about 200km away, so I'm not sure if it's worth the Journey.

Ô-Ô 200 km from a jewellery! Sure, don't make the journey only for asking!
      Where are you from?
I'm in France, all is nearest ;-)

What makes an Opal valuable ? I see them range in price from very little to thousands of dollars. And what makes you think mine are so worthless? My grandmother was a jeweller and collector.

      Never said worthless!
Very difficult to say only from pics! Best advice is to show them to an appraiser (opals are so difficult to photography)

Thanks I will try and find one.

I love all these stones. If you look long enough you can see certain things like a profile of a ladies face with long hair, a rabbit and at the top of the photo what appears to be a bird. You'll think I'm going crazy, I'm letting my imagination run away with me lol. There may be some Moonstones, which are similar to Opals.

Sorry just saw the carvings, in the Title
    12. TinyT, 9 years ago
Your not going crazy, there are faces and animals there ! They are all opals as far as I know. I have some moonstone too but they are not in the photo.
