THIS ITEM HAS PHOTOGRAPHED WAY TOO LIGHT--THE COLORS ARE DEEPER AND RICHER BY FAR--BUT MELLOW AND OLD AS WELL.. YOU ARE MISSING DETAIL!!! I"LL TRY FOR BETTER LIGHTING AND TAKE SOME MOREUNLESS IT IS MY CAMERA!
This is well over 100 years old!I was told 30 years ago this is an item of the Nova Scotia area. It shows oldtime clay figures, like peasants, in their sailboat made of pottery-clay (quite orange-red.) The waves and " woven-netting" is finely done and real looking. I can't edit here, so you'll have to enlarge if you will please to see the details. There are words and letters/numbers impressed into the clay (2144 big old-fashioned numbers) on back St. ANDRESSE on lower front in the black rim also what appears but hard to read in old longhand" , with florish turning end of name backwards under the signature. The item needs a cleaning--the dust and etc.. of a century at least on it. I just found it again--haven't seen it in decades. There used to be ropes coming thru the two holes at top I remember == Item is all made from "clay"--Clay figures too applied into the boat. Any information from the readers?? The photos are tooooo light, sorry.
St. Adresse (not Andresse) is a seaside resort in France near LeHavre. - This may be a "tourist souvenir"
THANKS!!! It is hard for me to see (just one eye works) and I so agree, it wouldn't have all that info on it if it wasn't a sounenir. It is totally handmade and old tho. The gent that sold it to me mentioned a northern site like Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, I have forgotten. So much time has elapsed ,over 30 years!! I do love this, it deeply stirs my soul. I love the sea and ships. So where do I live---Phoenix, AZ. Go figure.
Aghcollect got it!
These fisherman and boat were common souvenirs from french sea side in Brittany or Normandy till beginning of 20th century :-)
Search for Le Guluche (sculptor) L'Isle Adam (center of production for these potteries)
This is the only one I have ever seen in all my scouting around--I suppose many were broken over the years...as it is, I have several flake-chips in mine. As I would never sell this, I'll just leave it alone. So glad I found it again. Thanks for good input.
I love to search---so will do.Merci.
OMG--In photo 2 at the site--I see my signature on a related piece. Without you , I never would have known.Bon ami
So, I'm not so bad with you after all ;-)
Merci for merci!
Passe moi le vin!
So is this one signed by Louis Alphonse HANNE or Joseph Le GULUCHE (1849 - 1915)?
I cannot make it out, I tried, the size , the placement and the florish underscore are the hints I have... My item came from those potteries--there are near identical items shown at the site if you scroll down. All were a bit different, but obviously the same items in color. subject, size and theme--it was fun seeing more of what I have! You can view my signature in the second photo . black band , left side .Enlarge it twice. Can you do better than I ? I have sight in just one eye.Good Luck.
Ive had a good look and I believe it is by Louis Alphonse HANNE.
L.A.Hanne is the signature I think.
Here are some similar at 'Druot'.
From what I can make out L'Isle Adam is famous for two names Hanne & Le Guluche.
This is an article in French on Le Guluche:
http://www1.rfi.fr/francefr/articles/104/article_69669.asp
From what I can make out the factory was owned by Hanne and Le Guluche produced a huge number of works for him.
Thanks sooooo much!!!!!
After all these years it is sure adelight to have the information on my item provided by the collectors here. I honestly, would never have known and it adds a lot to my enjoyment of the piece. Big hugs!
I got it at the Salvation Army 2'nd Hand Store and was in love the minute I had it in my sight. I think, my favorite piece of all the stuff here.
