I found this cute little teapot at a thrift store yesterday. It is Chinese or Japanese. It has a dragon motif on the side. What I really love and have never seen before is the dragon coming out of the lid.....it is loose and actually moves around but can not be removed from the lid itself. So very cute and unusual!

There are chop marks inside the lid but I don't read Chinese or Japanese so I can not decipher them.

This is a traditional type of teapot from China. It's made from a special "purple sand clay" found in the area of Yixing. It's porous, unglazed, and should never be washed with soap (which will be absorbed into the clay and affect the taste of the tea.)

A web search for "Yixing tea pot" or "Zizha pottery" will give more information.

Thank you so very much for your information! I would never in a million years have known what it was!

I just read info about Yixing tea Pots!! What a fascinating story! I wonder how I can find out how old it is.

It's contemporary...there are web sites selling this today. But they are still desirable, and not inexpensive.

I love it because of the dragon theme. I have an antique Japanese tea set with gold dragons on it that is just beautiful. My absolutely favorite possession of all time. I should post it on CW. So this little to pot with the dragon sticking out of the lid was just too sweet to pass up. I paid $10 for it and sort of felt I was paying too much. Glad to hear I didn't get soaked!
