I really liked this very heavy pewter plate so I picked it up some time back. It's fun what you find when you do a little spring cleaning. Here is another item I haven't seen for a few months. I think I'll have to find it a nice home someday soon. It says Akron Pewter on the back. I keep getting Don Drumm studios when I search for it and I think this is his work. Can anyone tell me more?

He is an 80 yrs. old sculpter / designer / artist. His vintage work is out there under several studio names, however the only "real association" or employment I have ever found him having with any one company is Smith, Scherr and McDermott, he was a designer i believe for them.
Stands to reason his name will frustratingly come up under yet never yield anything connection them, several company searches , especially ones from Akron.
Oh and by the way. Akron & it's artists seem to love Pewter SO MUCH there is a pub called the Pewter Mug! hahah & other businesses with Pewter in the name. It seems to have been a great source of pride that is a huge part of community identity.

I noticed he uses a lot of similar motif's in his work so that's why I was curious. Then where is this item from?

Akron Pewter doesn't seem to hit the radar either with collectors, company history buffs or even old directories. It may very well have been one of the many private studios in that area, just my guess.
It looks reminiscent of Drumms work but there were so many studios & co's. that paid him to design. Others have imitated his works, not forged, imitated ;)
It's unlikely to be his , there would either be an Imprint of his name or an original tag with his name & especially when it was under a studio or company other than his own.

BTW he he is VERY MUCH active and still going, doing works in tin etc.
I would mail his studio. He seems like an accessible man and you might get a response either declaring it is his work / design, and at the very least he may pass on info about the mysterious Akron Pewter ;)
Here is his site to contact through. PLEASE LET US KNOW!
