Beautifully detailed basket. About 4x9 inches. It's been in the family for over forty years. I don't know it's origin. I don't know what was used to weave it.

This is called a California Mission Basket, and this one looks to be in EXCELLENT CONDITION! Check on Ebay for the amounts that these types of baskets are going for, and then do some research on this type of basket. Just put in a search for California Mission basket. And, please put this up somewhere until you can take to to a reputable dealer for appraisal and insurance amount....and if they offer you money right off the bat? Say NO.

Too funny! You literally made me laugh out loud. It is in very fine shape. I love the feel of this one because it's so tightly woven and smooth.

Thank you for your advice. I have put them all where it's safe. We aren't selling anything until we know the values. I am going to check and see if we have others similar to this one. It might be the only one we have from this tribe.

The other baskets that I did not comment on, I am not sure of and I can't super size the pics to see the weave. I am pretty sure a couple are not Native American, there were plenty of copycats around the world who tried to cash in on how popular the real deals were. But THIS one I am absolutely, 100% sure about. The value on this one will be in thousands, not hundreds. That is due to no real damage to the basket and no mold that I could see, and the color is still strong so it was kept away from direct sunlight. This one is a keeper for sure and remember what I said about anyone who appraises it making you an offer...they will make you think that 1500 bucks is alot of money. But not for one like this. I am only a collector of Native American basketry, and I have never sold any, ever which is why my apartment looks as small as it does LOL.

One thing: do NOT use anything to clean this or any other baskets you have. It may make them shinier but you are damaging the wood and the grasses, and you will not see it until it is too late. Use only a light duster on them and keep away from all direct sunlight. For this one keep it out of all sunlight, ok?
