This is a Photograph by John Adams Whipple 97 Washington Street Boston. 4 1/4 x 2 1/2
The woman is Mary Goddard Sprague from Addison County Vermont....the date on the envelope is 1855 with a ? mark.
I can not find any examples of Whipple's work before he joined with Black and the address changed.
The carte de visite looks to be a copy of an earlier image (heavily retouched or perhaps not originally photographic).
As a cdv, your photograph would date from 1860+.
Craig's list Whipple in partnership with Black in 1856- 59 and ALONE in 1860 at the address on the back of your cdv. So your cdv post dates the partnership.
I have seen similar backmarked Whipple cdvs.
