This is a contemporary 40 year repro of an EGYPTIAN TEAR VIAL,(First or Second Kingdom and probably beyong) handblown, etched and decorated, tear vase sent to me from Cairo many, many years ago by a gent. friend. I have feared handling it because of the delicate nature of it. These are collected and there is even a beautiful book called "Egyptian Vials" with color photos and interesting text. I don't know the costs of the book, or my "tear vase" because it was a gift, precious to me. I was a" special teacher" in Egyptian culture, etc for 5th Grade classes-- invitee to talk in my hometown as back when ---I was very well versed in Egyptology.( And the kids loved the stories about the traps in the pyramids, etc. I gave 1/2 talks thru the 5th grades.) It was fun!!
Here we have a replica of one of the tear vials. These were collected from women (maybe men too!) who mourned the passing of Pharaoh, or high ranking persons and buried with them in the tombs!! Many examples found in books--and my replica is very accurate and--- oh so beautiful!! I haven't collected my tears in it! They would have dripped down a runner in glass stopper like mine going nearly to the bottom of the vial. I don't know if you can see the amazing decorated stopper, ( with high fluting) there is real gold decorating on the vials. And many with lightly tinted glass which is etched in an all around pattern like mine.

      You are soooo nice!
    9. SparksGinny, 9 years ago
LOL.......it's so easy to be nice; being the opposite takes so much more energy, wouldn't you agree? I love to learn about the past, and all of the wonderful artistry that has taken place. It is a sad thing when I discover somebodies hard work neglected and forgotten; even thrown away, never to be seen again. I rescue these precious objects and restore them, give them love. Sounds strange? Perphaps, but somebodies got to do it, might as well be me! You take care Post Card Dude, and hope to hear from you soon. Ginny.
