RARE NEWSPAPER CARTOON STRIP POSTCARDS "LULU & LEANDER" 1906 HOWARTH

TWO postcards from 1906 featuring characters from the F.M. Howarth comic strip LULU & LEANDER from the N. Y.SUNDAY AMERICAN & JOURNAL. In looking at my card photo 2 & 3 I read that this card was a "Giveaway" from the paper, 1906--It was a card you could transform to a letter writing surface by undoing the tabs and having a nice place to write a real letter. If you chose to do so, it would cost you 2 cents to mail, instead of the post card rate of 1 penny. These cards have the pre 1907 undivided backs (no line separating the message from the address.) The dog that plagued him in the strip and on the cards is shown.. "Lulu" his girlfried is missing in card #2. (and others I have seen)
Leander was the star of the show. I had him on a piece of large format (11X14) sheet music the title of which was "AN E-Z MARK" At the time I didn't recognize him (few did, the strip only lasted 2 to possibly 3 years) and sold it cheap! Darn!
Franklin Morris Howarth's highly stylized artwork was a mainstay in the magazines PUCK , JUDGE and the original LIFE magazine prior to his newspaper comic strip work. He passed in 1908, two years after these postcards were circulated
