So much people describe these snuff bottles as "hand carved ivory or bone"...
Nearly each time a poster shows one so described, when I say (and explain why it isn't...), I'm not trusted :-(
This is RESIN!
Not modern, nor antique, vintage!
On this one, there was lots of very tiny "balls" stuck in many parts of the decor (you can see one on bottom part of pic#1)
I easily removed them with a needle, and burnt them: flame and chemical odor!!!
The red hot pin poke on a hiden part will tell too :-)
I post it as unsolved mystery for it to be seen ;-)
At least, my comment beeing on my post won't be deleted by the poster!
How do you know I can't be trust? ;-))
Of course, I may be wrong on some comments, but it is very frustrating to encounter folks who claim their obviously forgery items beeing the real thing...
If they know for sure, why ask?!
I always thought all of these bottles were carved ivory Kyra.... Thanks for the education.
Thank you oldandsilly for sharing my thought :-)
Thank you Rick for your thanks :-)
Thanks too Walksoftly and dear Manikin for your love !
Love this thread. Have to agree about the threads where the poster only wants to hear what supports their theory, or even better, tells them their item is valuable and rare. I'm the new kid here, and I'm trying my best to listen and learn from the masters here, even when they argue amongst themselves it's an education because we see that in disagreements the truth is eventually found. Sometimes feelings get hurt, yes, but as I said on another thread a moment of embarrassment is often the best teacher. As a wise old person once said, Live and learn. As far as these petty disagreements, Live and learn, move past and move on. Excuse me if I speak out of turn, but these are my thoughts. I enjoy being on CW with all of you, and hope your hurt feelings aren't fatal. :)
kyratango, that's an ivory snuff bottle.
*waits for head to explode*
Revenge, revenge!!! :))
Oh I guess I have one last bit to add, forgot about this. My feelings got hurt the other day here as well, someone on a thread of mine accused me of a number of things, then gave a good reason for speaking as they did. What can you do? Hold your breath to cool your soup. ;)
I appreciate the tip!
If I'm ever unsure I leave a mystery open or I do more research. I have had a few people Identify things wrong but in the same vein I have had a lot of really good identifications here as well. Everyone can be fooled so don't feel so bad. I almost put up an amazing Louis Vuitton fake for sale recently and the only thing that frustrated me was the money not being wrong. Because I was wrong I went and did research and learned how to not be fooled gain.
I had a very civil discussion about one of my items where the other person insisted they must be right due to my lack of experience. So I went on to seek an expert opinion and found all the reasons I thought I was right were correct. If you want to insist you are right have the information to back t up is all.
And it's pretty obvious for many reasons why that is fake. I see a lot of spots where it looks like the carver just gave up where it's flattened in or not fully detailed. No one would sit there and take this much time on a bottle and mess this up. Also I make steam punk jewelry and am really good at making things look old and they barely even tried here.
You can lead some people to information, but you can't always make it sink in Kyra.
I love seeing all of you discussing here!
we learn from confrontations and advices when affirmations are explained or discussed.
Katherine, lol, revenge of the revenge:

Thanks Kyra. Great post and comments.
I hate arguments, they never end well, so if people disagree with me I let it go.....
unless they can give me irrefutable proof and then I accept my error.
I've seen some awful things happen here and on some of my FB groups. Remember, collecting is supposed to be a pleasure!
Totally agree with you Racer, that's why I won't help anymore a poster who never do any research and delete links and comments she doesn't accept...
Thank you so much for your comment :-)
Thanks for the post, Kyra. I agree with what everyone has said regarding a civil discussion. No one knows it all, especially on old stuff, and there is often new information that can update the information of the day. I am humbled by the collective knowledge of the many people on this forum.
So many fakes out there and impossible to keep up. What bugs me the most is that the fakes ruin the buying market for the real stuff. If you can't tell if something is real or not, then no one wants to take a chance. This happened with Bakelite. I see fake eye miniatures all the time. Information such as yours should help everyone (except for the person knowingly selling the fake!).
Thanks!
So true, Bluboi!
We just have to see all these fake Gallé or Tiffany lamps, modern bronzes sold as Art Deco and posted here by folks for authentification who are ulcerated with comments they don't want to believe...
You are too humble! You know your pieces, your researches are so educative too!!!
You can only get knowledge by seeing, handling and feeling thousands of items, compare with the real things you can see in museums or books...
Then you can learn from your mistakes too, because any of us had or will get fooled at least once :-)
I have a huge box of "oops" stuff. It is the way I learn....
Hehe, this one was a OOPS too, that is why now.... I KNOW!
Yeah I got my box of stuff that I took chances on. I generally buy cheap so It's going to go to the unsellables yard sale box. They are all really pretty things in excellent condition mostly so why not have a big end of the summer sale. Then I have my bag I throw my oops I missed that stain or giant hole bag for the clothes. They both also double as oops I forgot my phone and had to play guessing games at the thrift store. So fun!
I've taken to biting a lot of things to check if they are resin. I'm going to end up with some weird disease some day I know it. :) But hey if the shop owner wants to tell me it's of a natural material and he gets his item back with a nice tooth mark in it not my problem.
A friend of mine has this huge duffle bag of oops -- we call it the body bag.... I have finally reached the point where I can forget about what I paid for the "educational experience" and let a friend just dump the stuff for whatever she can get. Though, I just remembered an oops I stashed in thee attic....
Interesting. How can you possibly give a sensible accurate opinion on an item within a photo without actually see the item in real life? There are Ivory and Bone items like these but obviously many fakes as well. All items can be fakes I sold a fake Pepsi Cola Clock on evilbay because the chrome surround came off when the parcel tape took the silver off so you just must do your homework on the items you like.
For sure, GeodeJem, nothing better to have the piece on hand :-)
But, without the knowledge of what you are examining, you may be wrong!!!
So much posters of "unique", "rare", "antique" items have them in hand and are fooled by a recent repro!
A pic on which the clues are visible can tell (if you KNOW the material and... the clues!).
There is a lot of collecting areas in which I have absolute no knowledge, I surely won't give an id on Art Glass (except fake Gallé!), Coca Cola pieces, art pottery and so on :-D
Thank you for your interest :-)
Amber can be a problem, difficult to date without Provenance. Amber has to be treated in the same as your resin.
Amber can't be identified from a pic, except for fake sold from China for 0.99 lol !

Lisa, so True!
Have a look to this one, it is a pity so much elephants were killed for their tusks if resin can fool so much people!!!

The link to the Ruby Lane article/store was great - thank you. Someone has posted a snuff bottle, and I'm going to send her this thread. Tomorrow I'll look at the other links you posted. Sooper Doooper information Krya!
