    (437 items)

Whats is going on!! Suffragette meeing?, Eastern Star?, Milinary workers group? Temperance workers? Ladies Christian Endeavor Round up?
The hats are heavy, ever towering higher and festooned with ridiclousness, SO what's up. OPINIONS PLEASE? Many Thanks.

AND there are a few men hanging aound, one carrying his shoes, one in rolled up sleeves. Ladies range in age 18-65, pretty, not pretty, skinny and fat--nothing I see links them together excepts whips?! or umbrellas which are shut, except 1 open , probably for shade.. Really hard to figure. They seem in the middle of nowhere.
HOW DID THEY GET SUCH A HUGE GROUP OF LADIES TO NOT TALK OR FIDGET????
PLEASE ENLARGE --THIS IS A REAL PHOTO POSTCARD. I COLLECT POSTCARDS.

Looks like a large family gathering on a farm . Not unusual to dress up for such a event . Great old photo :-)

The men folk must have headed for the hills. I see no houses anywhere--from whence have the ladies came?

Are these Mormons????--There are only a few men to lots of women. Maybe many brides to the 7 or 8 men seen.I think I may have solved this--but we may never know for sure.
Polygamy (called plural marriage by Mormons in the 19th century or the Principle by modern fundamentalist practitioners of polygamy) was taught by leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) for more than half of the 19th century. Now called "sister-wives".

Gathering of folks-- I see nothing distinctive of any particular group.

Any markings/ postmark to give any location clues?

I keep trying to figure it out--Too many women proportionate--Men drove them to the outskirts-- and phfft--most took off, ot there were trains of women. Maybe because I am a woman this seems a strange picture. I am trying to relate the group to something, which I will never be able to do. Maybe I am IN that group? Reincarnation!! Ha Ha!! Thanks Scottvez--You ARE the voice of reason. Card is unsent--no message.... Just sort of attracts me.

Without clues (markings/ history/ etc...) there is little chance of uncovering the true story.

Sad fact with many interesting antique images-- the STORY is lost and we are left to speculate.

I have an urge to have this photo enlarged now and framed. It still "tickles" me. Anyone have any hints the best way to do this?? ( and if I will lose the sharpness of the graphics and make it a really bad idea??)

      Nothing to give a clue--
The fact that a man has taken off his shoes seems unusual in the day, in front off all those women.Seems etiquette of the era would have frowned upon that kind of behaviour at such an" auspicious" event.

I believe I've solved the puzzle. These folks are hikers. The items that look like canes or umbrellas are walking sticks. Check out late 1800s and early 1900 hiking clubs on pinterest. The folks dressed up for these excursions in dresses and big hats too!

AND YES! That could account for the man with his shoe off--and the group must have gotten back to the finish, where anyone still able to sit up--could sit in a batch of chairs--and they have walking sticks! WoW! Mareredware---you're good!

Thanks PostCardCollector. I also noticed an x on the seated woman on the left. She must have been the person of interest to the postcard owner. When I googled 1800s hiking clubs, I got some similar photos to this postcard. I feel like a detective! ;)
