Indian blanket: from family of a Medical doctor (Bonham, Texas).
Strange round face in center, dancing creatures around edge. Looks similar to ancient pictographs on walls of Grand Canyon, Arizona, where tribe lived.
Never seen Indian blankets or crafts with figures like those shown on TV programs like Ancient Aliens(History Channel).
Blanket was kept in sacred place. Elders had mostly died off and was purchased between the World Wars. The doctor worked for years with needy Indian tribes in Arizona. He felt like the face and figures on the blanket were based on Indian legends.
Stories are great. But it turns out these symbols are similar to the culture of 19 th century Mexico...oh well---...
Don't read too much into the design, or what someone may have told you about this.
It's not Native American Indian.
It is a fairly common Saltillo weaving, a souvenir from Oaxaca, Mexico. The "strange round face" in the center is a representation of the Aztec sun design. The square in each corner surrounding the central circular design, depicts an eagle and snake on a cactus...the national symbol of Mexico, found on the national flag and national seal.
Here's a recent eBay Completed Listing for the same pattern: 251986661579
CanyonRoad, I was thinking of posting some of my grandmother's pots on here, in case you want to take a look at them, your thoughts would be appreciated.
Excuse me for intruding on your thread, Beowulf.
Excuse me again, as far as the pots, may not be posted today. I do have two or three of her pots and cups already on my page.
