I found this wonderful Painting that is signed Bene tto Alfieri (shortened version of Benedetto) (see photo) that depicts an older St. Anthony of Padua holding baby Jesus. Did this famous Architect of his time also do paintings? There is a religious connection to his upbringing since he was the Godson of Pope Innocent XII and studied under the Jesuits. He lived in Turin and worked in the late Baroque or Rococo style. I haven't taken the frame apart to see any details and the convex glass looks original to the hand-carved frame. I looked-up other depictions of St. Anthony with baby Jesus and I have not seen this particular depiction of St. Anthony as an older man. The varnish on the painting is breaking up in a print-like consistency. Any help appreciated. RER(BOB)
Wonderful painting!
What is the size? You say there is a convex glass, AND varnish? From the color "points" beside signature, I would say it is a miniature on ivory or velum/parchmin sheet.
A pic of the back may help too :-)
The painting is 5 1/4" by 4" Oval-shaped. The varnish is on the painting and is evident on the photo showing the signature. I will upload a close-up of St. Anthony's face instead of Jesus since my photo is not too clear. I will remove it from the frame but it could take some time. RER(BOB)
Thank you kyratango, SEAN68, fortapache, mikelv85, aghcollect and vetraio50 for the love. I was able to find one tidbit of Albieri also being a painter in Askart.com but you have to be a member to get any information
