Eduard Stellmacher, Amphora EDDA 1900

This has always been one of my favorite and unusually formed vases produced by the Amphora ceramics manufactory dates from c1896-1900. Eduard Stellmacher may have been inspired by deep see flora and fauna, three sculpted handles plunge down from a thick, protruding lip like the fleshy tentacles of a water anemone. Lip and handles are glazed in a luster of cantharides green, blue and purple hues. Connecting to faintly suggested shoulders, the handles smoothly transition into a gold colored drip glaze flowing halfway down the body. three ribcage-like sections pressed into the ochre and grey speckled body of the vase, terminating in a crown-like vault surrounding the base, suggest a muscular motion of contraction and expansion. Marks: stamped Amphora, EDDA below a swastika within a triangle.
