This is a mystery chess set. Unknown origin. Seeking information and value.
This vintage chess set is huge, each piece weighing an average of over 1 lb each. The total set weighs 41 lbs. The pieces have no mfg markings and only have a word on some pieces "CAST" in non typeface characters as to blend in with the piece details, almost like they are a mfg mark or symbol of some type.
I have only found one other picture on the Internet of a similar, yet not identical set.
The pics to the left are of my set. The King size in the set is 6 3/8" approximately. The wood king in the set is for reference. That is an 3 3/4" Jacques king. The picture to the right is the only other set I found on Google and the owner picked the set up at a local flea market and has no origin info. His set has been polished, mine has the original patina still.
Any information on origin or value would be appreciated.
I have the exact same chess pieces Greeks and Romans, but in a larger size. I also have a chess table made of brass that goes with the pieces. Just curious what this would be worth.
curious to know where both of you got your sets both sound kinda sketchy.
I wonder just how many chess sets are stolen and resold.
There was an expensive antique unique heirloom set that was stolen from us (I just found out today due to believing a mock version my sister bought was them, they're smaller and not "real" like the others were) We live in/around Indiana - not sure about the thieves but they were here. (she's certain she know who did it , I'm baffled nothing was done) but if I cant find those exact ones I want similar as possible cuz now I have board with no pieces. this set was made good deal of time before 1995. id love to hear anything from anyone honesty please.
I have a very similar set with pieces only my father brought back from somewhere during a Mediterranean cruise when he was in the navy.
Heya guys check out my profile, I have the same ish set (mines Romans vs Hannibal) inherited from my grandad.
A few years ago, some of my pieces were taken in an unfortunate set of circumstances and I have been searching for the lost pieces ever since, if anyone has an incomplete set or wants to sell any to me please get in contact, also I know everything about them so would be happy to share if your still looking for information.
hello, i have this series also, and would like to sell it to the right buyer. i have romans vs barbarians. i have a board, but do not have the original board that comes with the pieces. i purchased the pieces from an antique dealer 2 year ago, but can return to get information from the dealer that sold me the pieces. thank you for your time.
