Hello. My dad found this in a box. He thought it was a Dageurreotype, but a local auctioneer told him it was probably a tintype. Someone else I sent pictures to said it could be an ambrotype.

The exterior glass cover is dirty, but my dad does not want to take the frame apart for better photos (he's afraid of ruining the piece).

I am looking for help to identify what type of photo this is...

    Thanks!

Well photo is Civil War--sort of inbetween a Dagg and tin. If you turn the photo sidewats and see a mirror it's a dagg...if not mabe tin or ambro--I known nothing about ambro--Maybe you could go to the ,Matthew Brady site, and get some info there. He was "the photographer to the Civil War"--just a thought.

It is not a daguerreotype. Civil War dags are very unusual as the process fell out of favor in the US by about 1860.

A tintype is on a sheet of iron and an ambrotype is on glass. It can be somewhat confusing since both tins and ambros will usually have a cover glass when they are cased.

The condition of you image looks rough, but it will probably clean up fine, if most of the dust and dirt is just on the cover glass.

Should you decide to take it apart do NOT touch the image itself.

      scott
