    (762 items)

About 1850s French silver and gold (24K) pendant with 30 seed pearls as suggested by Kyratango hand painted on (probably) ivory cupid in centre.
Sterling Silver and 24K gold (acid tested with touchstone) .The inner depicting a cherub.
On the edited bail of the pendant is a French mark of what I think to be the boar's head.
The weight of the jewel is 8.1 grams.

Superb, and it goes so well with your earrings!
But... Not enamel, it is a grisaille miniature on ivory! (I had several of these, on mine the locket was opening)

kyratango there is some technique involved :
Grisaille is a type of decoration in painted enamel in which the picture or design is in monochrome, usually shades of grey on a white ground. The process involves first applying to the entire surface of a metal base a coating of dark enamel (usually black) that is then fired, then covering in with transparent of translucent white enamel which is fired, after which the design is outlined and developed by successive painting in shades of grey, white and black, in varying thicknesses to that the design appears as if in relief. Sometimes the monochrome is in shades of purple or brown.
This text is taken from the book: an illustrated dictionary of Jewelry by Harold Newman page 145.

You're right for the term applies too to enamel, but on this one, I can assure it is painted on ivory :-)
Does it open? If yes, it is easy to check.

Kyratango probably you'r right but unfortunately i cannot open so i cannot check either. But thanks for your information and comment.

kyratango, when I put the pendant hanger on CW, I only watched it when it was already dark. After you comment, I again studied it carefully, now in daylight. I come to the conclusion that indeed you're right. The portrait is not grisaille enameled but hand painted probably on ivory. Once again shows how good it is these professionals meet here. Thank you very much!!!! Can you also have a date to give please?
    13. kyratango kyratango, 9 years ago
Agram, when you thought it was enamel, I seriously worried about your vision, LOL!
Now you explain it was dark when you posted, I'm quiet :-) Thanks!!!
For the era, it is later than Georgian (so to say, as no Georgian era in France!) the boar's head hallmark is for 1838/1962 but this 18th revival style place it around 1860 (don't forget fashion was not exactly the same in France than in England...)

PostCardCollector, thanks for your poignant comment. This kind of images were in former times much but in this modern age (unfortunately) not. But yes I agree with you, it's a very sweet image. One of the reasons why I love antique jewelry in this "hard"modern world..
