My favorite shop owner found this large ( 50" X 60") painting in the attic of a house in the Squirrel Hill area of Pittsburgh. We could not make out the signature. I purchased the painting and brought it home and studied the signature until I deciphered that it was an artist by the name of Julien Celos. He is noted for painting buildings and scenery and I could not find another portrait by the artist. I thought that the subject was interesting because she is a girl and she is playing with a bow and arrow in 1919. I do not know how the painting made it to Pittsburgh but I loved it despite a few issues. This came with a very large original frame that is not pictured. The following is all that I could find about this artist on the internet:
Julien Celos was born in Antwerp, Belgium in 1884. He was a painter and watercolorist of urban views and interiors. He studied at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts under the tutelage of the famed master teacher and artist, Franz Courtens. Celos exhibited at the important venues in Belgium as well as at the Brussels World Fair in 1910 and the "Salon des Artistes Independants" in Paris in 1912. He worked on motifs of historic villages and cities of Belgium and Holland. He traveled and painted as well in France, England and Tunisia. He was inspired by city of Bruges and painted images of its picturesque streets. Julien Celos was a member of the important Flemish group, "Cercle Als Ik Kans" in Antwerp.
Many of these old oils really brighten up the colors when they are professionally cleaned - some of them are well worth the expense
