This is the early form of spring pince-nez, which folds to be cased!
It bears the early eagle's head hallmark for 18k, France, 1838/1919.
I bought it at Drouot, in 70'. The auctioneer held a previous sale of Compositor Gioacchino Rossini's memorabilia... Strange it seems the same on last pic!
But I have no proof it belonged to him :-/
The spring is gold too, but I still don't understand how these models could be worn without falling... Notice it was secured with a chain or thread.
Thank you Don, Kevin and Inky for your lovely visit! Love you too ;-))
Interesting documentation about eye glasses through the ages:

Thank you Manikin :-)
Holy smokes, that's a beauty. I haven't seen them in 18k. Yes, one fall and the lenses were history.
What an interesting piece Kyra... and with the case no less. I love it!
Thank you LeDandy and Rick for your kind comments!
Thanks too to the further lovers :-)
