Very nice!
Well it's defiantly Oriental does it open can it hold pictures or some sort of book.
Wood ??
Printing blocks.
Japanese or Chinese.
If printing blocks then they have been carved in reverse.
It will need a trained eye to read these .... Mirror image mind!
Definitely Chinese, I recognized a few numbers and one or two other characters, but I believe it is traditional Chinese. If you are able to correctly "draw" the characters on a computer or phone, Google translate will be able to translate it.
Thank you Radegunder.
Zowie, they are wood. Black with gold on the symbols. One wire on each to hang on wall or ceiling. Groove on both sides as if it could slide into something bigger.
Cant hold pictures or a book. Thank You!
vetraio50, Yes made of wood. You may be right.
Were printing blocks made of wood? Thank You!
NutfieldHistory, I tried Google translate on the picture. It only gave a few words and the rest was gibberish. Thank You
Thanks for such detail but you are well known for that & appreciated sorry to take a bit to get back. Anyway I thought the design or symbols may of been a language then maybe it could be traced that way. Just a thought. It looks very precious anyway. I hope it works out well.
I say lets ink it up and press it on some paper so you can have someone tell us what it says ...smiling ,nice find.
Funny thing, it's a piece of relic from 19 century, definitely Japanese printing block , not Chinese even if the language used is Chinese. If it's Chinese, the centre of page would been in the middle, not bottom.
To be precise, it's the one of the printing blocks for volume 8 of a Jap article. Obviously to be the first page of appendix. I could find the book from Australian National Library. Check it out.

Unfortunately, I can't give you more clue as this forum doesn't support image in post nor Oriental char. Shameful.
