This is a pass from the Norfolk Southern Railroad dated 1928. This is not the present day NS, which was formed in 1982. This original Norfolk Southern RR started life in 1870 as the Elizabeth City & Norfolk RR. After various mergers, bankruptcies and reorganizations it became the Norfolk Southern Railroad in 1910 and stretched from Norfolk, VA to Charlotte, NC. In 1942 the railroad reorganized again, emerging as the Norfolk Southern RWY. The railroad was taken over by the Southern in 1974 and ironically is now part of the present day Norfolk Southern. When the present day NS created its heritage fleet of specially painted locomotives, #8114 was painted to commemorate this Norfolk Southern.
