    Got this beauty for cheap recently. Looks like it lead a productive life. I love how nice the color of the copper is on it. No idea as to date or manufacturer.

      Actually it is quite common and still made. Copper, lead and brass mallets/hammers are softer than the steel you may strike with them. Therefore you don't damage the steel....like setting a bearing. They are also non magnetic and they don't spark if you are working with or on a gas line. I prefer brass as it tends to hold up better.
